Reiki is a holistic approach to well being that teaches that disease is not separate from the body. It is the body that is out of balance. As a healing modality, Reiki assists us by releasing any blockages of energy in the body in order to reduce stress and promote relaxation. The free flow of energy enables the body to use its own resources to improve health.

Reiki can help speed healing and treat pain from an injury, illness or surgery. You can receive Reiki regularly to help with ongoing physical or emotional issues. Reiki is an enjoyable, easy way to relax, rejuvenate, relieve stress and renew a connection with your spiritual self. Reiki effectively complements and supports medical and psychological treatments, and it does not interfere with the actions of medication.

Reiki (pronounced "ray-key") is a natural healing technique, thought to have originated from the healing practices of Tibetan monks thousands of years ago. Such techniques have been described in ancient religious and other texts. In the late 1800's this healing process was introduced to Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui, a religious scholar and teacher who had studied healing in Tibet. Usui named the therapy Reiki and developed the Usui System of Reiki Healing, the foundation of the therapy today. Usui's system was brought to Kauai, Hawaii in the 1930s by Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-American woman who had received the esteemed degree of Reiki Master from one of Usui's disciples. After teaching it there for years, she brought the practice to the mainland U.S. in the 1970s.

The word Reiki is derived from two Japanese symbols (kanji ideograms) - "Rei," meaning "universal " and "Ki," meaning "life force energy." This energy is equivalent to the vital life force, or qi, in traditional Chinese medicine, and to prana in Ayurvedic medicine. The word Reiki refers to a balanced universal life force energy. This reflects the spirit as being one with the universe and recognizes that every living thing has its own energy.

Reiki treatments are not just for the ill or injured. They can help to maintain and enhance health. Reiki benefits us at four different levels: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. It always seeks the highest good of the receiver, and can do no harm. It does NOT involve any form of hypnosis, mind control or psychic healing. It is not massage, but can be used in conjunction with body work. It is not a religion. And, it is not a substitute for traditional medical treatment.
